Sometimes, we experience an earthquake of the soul. Our world is shaken by the surges of uninvited waters. Waves of chaos pound our confused hearts. Yet when these inevitable times come, we can stand strong. Here’s what the psalmist wrote:
Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!
The psalmist reminds us that when tough times come (and they will come), we always have God on our side. Like a fortified city secured by high, thick walls, God is our shelter of protection. Our security is not found in finances, armies, or physicians. God alone is our refuge and strength, and he is ever-present. People will come and go, but our God never leaves us.
Therefore, we will not fear! Spurgeon says it this way, “Evil may ferment, wrath may boil, and pride may foam, but the brave heart of holy confidence trembles not. Great men [and women] who are like mountains may quake for fear in times of great calamity, but the man [and woman] whose trust is in God needs never be dismayed.”
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to be fearful. I want to trust in you alone. Please draw me to yourself, to the safety of your person. Help me feel your strength and presence. Help me stand strong in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
