Refuge: When You Can’t Pray

Romans 8:26-27
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

There are times when words won’t come. We have said all we know to say every way we know to say it. We are not giving up or giving up on God. We are desperate for his help and strength. We are simply exhausted from wrestling in prayer. Can you relate?

God knows there will be times when we are worn out but look again at today’s passage. When we are done, the Holy Spirit is just beginning! He takes over in our weakness. When words won’t come, the Spirit prays on our behalf with deep groanings that cannot be translated into human words. This is not “speaking in tongues.” This is God the Spirit, praying for us to God the Father, through our intercessor, God the Son.

God knows our weaknesses and he is there to help us. He will never leave us alone. He will not stand silently by in our suffering. The Holy Spirit is praying for you as you pray and when you are prayed out. Best of all, he is praying for you according to God’s perfect will.

Holy Spirit, thank you for praying for me when I have no more words. Thank you for praying for me deeply and meaningfully. Thank you for praying for me in line with God’s perfect will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
