Road Rules: A Word in Season

Do you ever wonder if anything you do makes an impact? I do. In fact, I was feeling that way not long ago. I wasn’t thinking of throwing in the towel or being emotionally distraught, but I was in a funk of discouragement. And that’s when God sent a “messenger” with a “word in season.”

Amazingly, the timely words changed my attitude almost instantly. It wasn’t so much what was said as that I was taken that God cared enough to send someone with such a fitting message. Sometimes, the timely words come from God himself. And sometimes, God knows I need a person in the flesh to look me in the eyes and offer useful encouragement. Today’s proverb says it like this.

Proverbs 15:23
To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is!

Maybe you are in a funk of discouragement today. Please know how much God loves and cares for you. Remember that “he who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). If you’re not in a “funk,” maybe God is appointing you to be his messenger to speak “a word in season” to someone who is discouraged. You may be the one to speak words that will bring joy to others.

Father, I pray for three things. First, send encouragement to those who need it. Second, send messengers on “a word in season” missions. Finally, if we just need to quit feeling sorry for ourselves, let us know that, too. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
