Road Rules: Father Knows Best

Anyone remember the old television show Father Knows Best with Robert Young, Jane Wyatt, and their children, “Princess”, “Bud”, and “Kitten”? (OK, I had to google this information…I only remembered the name of the show…you’ve got to believe me). In this 1950s show, the father always had the right advice at the right time. Let’s be honest, forget Robert Young, many people could produce their own show—titled I Know Best.

We really think we do know best, don’t we? I evaluate happenings based on my experience. I assess my communication based on my perspective. I judge decisions on how they will impact me and mine. My personal appraisal of life leads me to believe that I am the possessor of wisdom and that everybody else should get in line behind me. Now that’s a problem, isn’t it?

Here’s what today’s proverb says:

Proverbs 3:7-8
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

To live a life of spiritual health, our heavenly Father must always be at the head of the line. We must jettison our own wants and desires and live in obedience to him. True wisdom begins when we embrace him as our Father and dread his disdain for sin. Our heavenly Father always knows best.

Father, keep us looking to you for true wisdom, following you for clear instruction, and obeying you for spiritual health. Thank you for always knowing what is best for us.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
