Road Rules: God’s Sovereignty

Sovereignty is an attribute of God that provides confidence. Sovereignty confirms that God is in control. Sovereignty describes the exercise of God’s power over all creation. God rules over every life and in all of history. He “works out everything for its purpose.” That’s what today’s proverb tells us.

Proverbs 16:4
The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.

God ensures us that everyone’s actions and the consequences of those actions correspond to his purposes—even the “wicked” who live opposed to his Word and will.

Sovereignty expresses God’s ability to accomplish his will and his dependability to do all he has promised. Because God is sovereign, we know that his Person is sure, and his Word is rock solid.

God’s sovereignty is the basis for faith. He not only works everything out according to his intentions, but he promises to work them out for good to all who love him and are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). Thank God for his sovereign control over all things. Without it, our faith is useless.

Father, thank you for your loving control and power over all creation. Thank you for being the all-powerful God whose Word is certain and whose promises are sure. Thank you for being the God who can be trusted. Grow our faith in you.
In Christ’s name.
Amen.
