Road Rules: Paths of Peace

Steve McNair was killed…by his lover. She shot the former All-Pro quarterback, husband, and father of four, four times. Then, she ended her life as well. What a sad story! What a reminder of Scripture’s relevant truth: A life of duplicity leads to destruction (Proverbs 11:3). But a life of wisdom…well, here’s what today’s proverb says.

Proverbs 3:17
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

This proverb is found in a section where Solomon personifies wisdom. He describes wisdom as “more profitable than silver” and “more precious than rubies.” Investment in wisdom “yields a better return than gold.” In wisdom’s right hand, she holds “a long life,” and in her left hand, “are riches and honor.” Solomon is clear that wisdom is not book-learning or simply the result of life experience. Both are important…as far as they go, but the “fear of God” is foundational to wisdom—a double-edged sword that invites us to embrace God as Father (even Abba Father) and dread his contempt for sin. The result of proper fear of God is the beginning of true biblical wisdom.

Wisdom does not guarantee a problem-free life, and it certainly does not make us immune to the fallout of bad decisions made by those we love. Biblical wisdom does promise something deeper and more profound. God will make our way “pleasant” by pouring his favor and blessing on our obedience. And God will bring peace to our paths—a peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Now that’s a better place!

Father, place within our hearts a desire to follow hard after you. Keep us on a path where your blessings rain down upon us. Keep us on the path where your peace fills our hearts. O God, protect us from being found in the story of a life that leads to destruction. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
