Road Rules: Trust

by | Aug 17, 2024 | Daily Devotion, Road Rules | 0 comments

In the psalms, King David wrote, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses….” It’s easy to get caught up in false security, isn’t it? Allowing careers to give us identity. Allowing retirement plans to give us security. Allowing investments to make us feel good about the future. Allowing where we live or what we drive to make us feel significant.  Allowing our “chariots” and “horses” to make us feel safe and protected. For the believer, though, things must be different. David adds to his statement, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7).

Today’s proverb echoes this same truth.

Proverbs 16:20
Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

Prosperity does not come from material things but from the spiritual discipline of following God’s instruction. Blessing does not come from anything the world can offer but from a deep trust in the sovereign Lord.

In 1922, Rhea F. Miller wrote a song that has stood the test of time. Check out these words and ask yourself: Would I rather have Jesus, or would I rather have things that will never satisfy?

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I’d rather be His than have riches untold
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand

Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today

Father, examine our hearts and help us answer this question honestly. If we say we’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords, show us if we are truly demonstrating that desire with our lives.
In Christ’s name.
Amen.
