Silent Before Herod

[expand title=”Devotion Text”] Luke 23:6-12
On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. That day Herod and Pilate became friends —before this they had been enemies.

Pilate wanted nothing to do with Jesus — the man or His trial. As soon as he learned that Jesus was from Galilee, Pilate sent Him to Herod. Herod ruled over the northern province. Jesus was his responsibility.

Herod was happy to see Jesus, but not for the right reasons. Jesus did much of His ministry in Herod’s territory and Herod wanted to see the person he had heard so much about. He wanted Jesus to do a miracle for him. Jesus, however, was not there to perform. With Herod asking for a sign and the Jews making accusations, Jesus remained silent. Jesus was ridiculed and mocked, then sent back to Pilate. Herod and Pilate were previously not on good terms, but on that day they became friends.

Jesus did not come to perform. He did not come to show us another sign. His mission was clear. He came to die so we could live. He purchased life for us by His death on the cross. Signs will draw a crowd; the cross drew scorn. Signs will fade away; the cross purchased life eternal. Jesus let His actions speak for Him. He came to give His life as a ransom for many.

Lord Jesus, thank You for carrying out the mission of the cross. Don’t let me seek another sign but help me cling to the cross that changes my life and my eternity. In Your name. Amen.
