Stubborn Hearts

Psalm 81:11-16
But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes! Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever. But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.

“If my people would only listen to me….” Do you hear God’s frustration in this psalm? He wanted to protect Israel and provide for them. He wanted to give them the “finest of wheat” and “honey from the rock.” Just as parents want the best for their children so God desires the best for us…things that bring lasting satisfaction.

Unfortunately, Israel would not listen. They refused to follow God’s instruction. They were smarter than Him, or so they thought, so He let them follow the dead-end trail of their desires. He let them learn the hard way where their stubborn hearts would lead them.

How about you? You really don’t have to learn the hard way. Those lessons are vivid and painful. Sometimes our stubborn sin, even when graciously forgiven, results in irreversible life circumstances. God repeats His plea to us: “If [you] would only follow my ways” I have some great things for you. Jettison your stubborn heart and listen to God!

Father, show me where I am being stubborn and not listening. Soften the hard spots of my heart. Remind me that Your way is always the most satisfying. Thank You for providing good things for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
