Revelation 19:11-14
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses.
The Greek word for “word” is logos, a term rich in meaning. Greek philosophers regarded logos to be the primary principle that governed the universe. Jewish readers understood logos as a reference to God. In the Old Testament, the “word of the Lord” established covenants, communicated law, and provided guidance. And, even more significant, the word of the Lord carried an active power. In the Genesis account of creation, God spoke the world into existence. He said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
John explains that the man named Jesus, who walked on earth and died on a cross, was the Word. He was the “image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). He was the “exact imprint of his nature” (Hebrews 1:3a). Jesus was the very expression of God. When you see Jesus, you see God. When you hear Jesus, you hear God.
The Word of God is still the creative power of God. Not only did Jesus create the world and everything in it, but he also recreates the sinful heart that separates man from God. His robe is dipped in blood. It is by his blood that The Word of God has purchased for God those “from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9). Man is united with God only through Jesus, The Word of God.
Lord Jesus,
Thank you for being The Word of God. Thank you for leaving heaven to live on this earth so that we could see what God looks like, sounds like, and how God interacts with man. Thank you for expressing the love of the Father all the way to the cross. Help us respond to you at a deeper level of love and worship.
In your name, we pray. Amen.
