Wealthy or the Widow?

Mark 12:41-44

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

The line was long. Men and women waited patiently for their turn to place an offering in the temple treasury. Some were dressed in the finest material of the day, a statement of their wealth. Others stood clothed in the worn-out garments of the poor. Each person came with money to give to God.

Many rich people were in line that day. When it was their turn, Mark writes that they “threw in large amounts.” The wealthy were giving to impress. They were looking for a, “Wow!” from people. No doubt, many were amazed at the amount. They gave out of their abundance. They sacrificed nothing to give.

A poor widow was also in line that day. When it came her turn she “put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.” She gave sacrificially, trusting God to supply her needs. Here’s the question: Does your giving attitude look more like the wealthy or the widow? It’s not about the amount; it’s all about the attitude.

Father, help me to check my heart. When it comes to giving, do I look more like the wealthy or the widow? In Jesus’ name. Amen.
